Top 5 Products for Soothing Summer Skin
As much as I love summertime, the one thing I don’t love is how it makes my skin feel. It’s in a constant state of being irritated, stressed, and overheated, so I’m forever on the verge of looking like a ripe tomato. Luckily, there’s plenty of soothing skincare options out there that immediately get to work to remedy the situation.
The number one product for me that I always have on-hand in the summer is the Milk Makeup Cooling Water. It always feels cold on application, and it feels even better if you store it in the fridge (I got that tip from my mom!). It contains aloe leaf juice and sea water for their anti-inflammatory and soothing properties as well as caffeine to de-puff. Quickly striping this over any flushed areas throughout the day instantly soothes them and brings down redness.
A face mist is a must for me to cool down too, and lately the one I’ve been reaching for over and over (and not just because the packaging is blue and therefore telling me it’s soothing) is the Anese Can I Speak To Your Manager? Toner. Like the Cooling Water, it also contains aloe, in addition to rose water, billberry extract, white willowbark, and orange and lemon extracts. It’s meant to balance the skin, provide an extra layer of hydration, and give the skin a glow. I love how this one smells, so I keep it nearby often.
When my skin is getting too stressed out, I swap out my usual serum for the Glossier Super Pure serum. It contains both niacinamide and zinc, which work together to soothe redness and help with blemishes. It really helps keep breakouts at bay and calms my skin down, so I always have a backup on hand. It’s a lightweight, watery serum, so it mixes well into other serums, too - I usually mix it with Super Bounce for a little more hydration.
Speaking of hydration, I make a beeline for gel moisturizers in hot weather. I have dry skin, but thick creams still feel oppressive when my skin is feeling hot and stressed. Instead, I like to apply lightweight layers. My favorite moisturizer this summer has been the Drunk Elephant B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Gel. It sinks into the skin quickly and is incredibly soothing and plumping. I’ve noticed my skin is dramatically smoother when I’m wearing this, too, so it’s the perfect base for makeup.
The last must-have in my skin-soothing arsenal is a cooling mask. The Belif First Aid Anti-Hangover Soothing Mask has been my go-to for years now - it’s a clear gel mask that instantly calms the skin down. It can be washed off or left on overnight - I typically wash it off, but leaving it on for a longer period of time feels amazing after a super hot day. As the name suggests, it’s great after a night out, too. It’s star ingredient is chamomile, which is known for its calming properties. I’m having trouble finding this available to order online at the moment, so another one I’m currently testing and loving so far is the Dr. Jart+ Water Fuse Hydro Sleep Mask. It feels quite similar, but is a little more moisturizing.
