5 Unconventional Ways to Use Your Makeup Bag Staples

Beauty junkies rarely say, without hesitation, that they are minimalists. And with the summer vacation mode kicking in, packing can definitely be a struggle. When you can only bring the essential makeup products, it feels like you’re sacrificing perfect brows for more lipstick options, etc. However, it doesn’t have to be that way. Today, I want to share my tips for making the most out of your common makeup bag staples. So pick out that holy grail concealer, that eye shadow palette you can’t live without, and your most foolproof mascara and you are all set for your newest adventure!

USE CONCEALER AS EYE SHADOW PRIMER

Especially if you’re traveling to warmer, humid climates, eye shadow primer is a must for making sure that your eye makeup doesn’t melt off in the heat. Use concealer in place of your eye shadow primer to act as a binding base for the eye shadow. I like to use this Flex Concealer from Milk Makeup because it leaves a matte finish, despite its creamy texture. I’ve also found that applying this concealer to my eyelids first helps the eye shadows show up more pigmented.

USE LIP BALM AS EYE GLOSS

The glossy eye look is a super easy and effortless eye look that is perfect for travel. Word of advice before you drop $20+ on an eye gloss at Sephora, use your lip balm instead. Chances are, you already carry a lip balm in your bag at all times. Glossier’s Birthday Balm Dotcom is a personal favorite because it smells subtly of vanilla cake and contains shimmer to take that glossy eye look to the next level.

MAKE A CUSTOM LIP TINT WITH EYE SHADOW AND LIP BALM

Save yourself the trouble of bringing multiple lip products by making your own lip tint. All you need to do is swatch some lip balm generously to the back of your hand, mix in eye shadow pigment, and there you have it! A hydrating sheer lip tint in the shade you desire. I used my Raw lip balm and Colourpop’s Supershock Shadow in White Rabbit for this coppery-peach lip tint.

MAKE A BROW POMADE WITH CONCEALER AND EYE SHADOW

Simply warm some concealer on the back of your hand and mix a brown eye shadow that is closest to your natural brow color for a brow pomade that makes your brows look fuller. The concealer also helps smooth down any unruly hairs as well. If I wear any eye shadow when I travel, I like to use this Honest Beauty Eye shadow Trio in Sable Brown. It contains two matte brown shades and a matte white shade that is great for highlighting the brow bone. You can apply this with your finger or an angled brow brush for more precise application. I like to comb through with a spoolie after to help the tint blend better.

MAKE CREAM HIGHLIGHTER, BLUSH, AND BRONZER

Eye shadow is your best friend when it comes to the multipurpose concept. It doesn’t have to be confined to just your eyelids. You can blend the light, shimmery shades with a soft concealer (like Glossier’s Stretch Concealer) to create a cream highlighter, use the rosier shades for a cream blush, or mix in the earthier, brown shades for a cream contour/bronzer. Sky is the limit. I used the Lorac Unzipped Eye shadow Palette in the shades Undiscovered and Unbelievable mixed with Unconditional for the highlighter and blush. For the bronzer, I used the Honest Beauty Eye shadow Trio that I mentioned above in the shade Soft Stone.
