Ingredient Spotlight: Colloidal Oatmeal
Often mispronounced, my work colleagues and I took turns at trying to say “Colloidal Oatmeal” correctly. The result… less than impressive. There was some colloidial oatmeal, some colloidal oitmeal and a new fun game of “try saying this ten times fast” was discovered. Regardless of its tongue twister of a name, colloidal oatmeal is a tried and tested, all round awesome treatment for sensitive and eczema prone skin.
So, what is it? What makes colloidal oatmeal so special compared to just regular oatmeal? Well to understand that we need to put on our lab coats and get our science on. A colloid (colloidal solution) is defined by the Illustrated Dictionary of Science, Andromeda as “A system in which two (or more) substances are uniformly mixed so that one is extremely finely dispersed throughout the other.” So, colloidal oatmeal is purely oatmeal that has been refined, boiled and dispersed evenly through a solution so that it can be received by the skin easier than oatmeal’s natural state. Oatmeal naturally has a high level of proteins, starches, beta-glucans and is rich in flavonoids. These work together to be soothing, anti-inflammatory, moisturizing and barrier reparative. Hence, the use of topical colloidal oatmeal has been proven to help ease itching, inflammation and many forms of dermatitis.
