Mary's Primer Picks

They’re a highly-disputed product in the beauty industry. Why do we need them if we’re buying expensive foundations? It’s true many people can pull of a flawless face without a good primer, but if you’re anything like me, a primer can take your base to a whole ‘other level. Over the past month, I’ve forgotten to put a primer on more than once, and on each occasion my makeup deteriorated rapidly throughout the day. I’m talking slipping and sliding, breaking up through the t-zone and even disastrous moments where a simple mid-day touch up ended up with my foundation picking up off my skin leaving a worse situation than before. So, this is for all the sceptics, a curated list of four primers I use whether on myself or clients to ensure a perfect result.

This is my go-to for anyone who says, “I have oily skin and I just want a primer I don’t care which one”. The Smashbox Photofinish Foundation Primer - Light gives the skin a soft matte finish while controlling oil. It isn’t drying and it smooths out the skin without a super ‘silicone-y’ feel.

If you’re looking for something quick and easy, that also incorporates skincare, look no further than the Urban Decay B6 Vitamin-Infused Complexion Prep Priming Spray. I love the Quick Fix Spray in this range as well, but I chose this one because I use it almost every day. The Vitamin B6 in this spray controls oil, reduces the look of pores, is anti-inflammatory AND is moisturizing. Wow is the word that comes to mind, but it doesn’t end there. The spray also has Tocopherol (Vitamin E) to strengthen the skin’s barrier and fight free radicals, AS WELL AS Salicylic acid to help treat breakouts. Chuck this one in your bag for a refreshing mid-day pick me up.

Discolouration and dullness? The Nars Radiance Primer is my go-to. With a salmon tint, this helps even out the overall tone of the skin while lending a beautiful glossy radiance at the same time. If you have trouble matching your foundation tothe different zones of your face, this will make your job a lot easier.

I hear you, “It’s too many steps” never fear, I have one last option for you busy bees. The Dr Dennis Gross Hyaluronic Moisture Cushion is by no means under-exposed in the industry, BUT what you may not know is that you can slap this on not only as an excellent moisturizer, but use it in place of a primer. The Moisture Cushion has priming properties making it perfect for everyday application. The Hyaluronic Acid in this oil-free formula, make it an excellent moisturiser and primer for those with dehydrated to oily skin.
