5 Mattifying Primers for Oily Skin

If you have oily skin like me, you’ve probably heard the saying “oily skin is both a blessing and a curse” a million times. Oiliness might help slow down the aging process and prevent wrinkles, but it makes makeup application SO difficult. Over the years I have found that using the right primer works wonders for my oily skin, and the best kinds are mattifying. Here’s a breakdown of my favorite primers for helping my skin stay shine-free throughout the day.

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer

$54 USD / $63 CAD

I love how this oil-free primer makes my skin feel silky smooth! It is super lightweight and has the most incredible, cloud-like texture. It does a great job reducing the appearance of pores, fine lines/wrinkles as well as any skin discoloration and it also contains mineral-derived SPF 15 to protect skin against sun damage. The only downside is the heavy price tag but this hasn’t discouraged me from repurchasing several times!

Tatcha The Silk Canvas

$52 USD / $63 CAD

First things first, how beautiful is this packaging?!? I had no idea this was makeup and thought it was face cream upon first sight… then I thought it had to be a cleansing balm after opening it because it’s literally a condensed balm of pressed silk layers. The waxy texture definitely made me a little hesitant the first time I used it until the balm began to melt onto my fingertips into a velvety, cream-like primer. Not only does it leave skin silky smooth and have a blurring effect on skin imperfections, it contains pink and gold pearl to keep skin glowing throughout the day. It has the most incredible, clean scent (similar to other Tatcha skincare products) and it even comes with a cute spatula to help minimize contamination from hands.

Touch In Sol No Poreblem Primer

$18 USD / $23 CAD

This pore-perfecting primer is probably my favorite makeup discovery of 2019 so far! It’s super lightweight and has a silky, cream-like texture that smooths onto my skin allowing for even makeup application. It contains green tea extract which makes it great for oily skin because the tannins help regulate sebum production to minimize oil production (people with oily skin overproduce sebum which leads to clogged pores and breakouts). Ever since I’ve started using this primer I’ve noticed that my skin doesn’t get as oily as it used to throughout the day and it hasn’t clogged my pores. The soluble collagen also helps to keep my skin feeling hydrated. I will definitely be repurchasing this one, especially since it only costs $18!

Smashbox Photo Finish

$36 USD / $44 CAD

This is another one of my favorites and actually the first primer that I fell in love with years ago! It’s an oil-free, water-based primer that has a velvety, gel-like texture. It makes my skin feel super soft and definitely helps to blur pores, lines and wrinkles. It’s also packed full of antioxidants (vitamins A/E) so it helps protect skin throughout the day. There are several“Photo Finish” variations (pore minimizing, redness reducing, skin tone evening, radiance boosting, etc.) but I prefer “The Original”.

Dr. Brandt Pores No More

$45 USD / $55 CAD

Last but not least, this Dr. Brandt pore-refining primer is excellent for controlling shine and minimizing the appearance of pores! It contains several ingredients that are great for oily and/or acne-prone skin including tea tree oil (absorbs oil and helps unclog pores), flaxseed extract (absorbs oil and reduces shine) and mineral-rich powder microspheres (minimize the appearance of large pores). It’s the most lightweight and mattifying out of all of these primers but it does have a slight medicinal scent.
