5 Neutral Eyeshadow Palettes for Beginners
Eyeshadow palettes are probably one of the most exciting products in the makeup world. If you’re like me, looking at a thoughtful and cohesive selection of colors neatly organized in a compact is one of the most pleasing sights.
Makeup is fun and exciting because of all the colors and options, but if you’re not much of a bold makeup user, don’t go for a palette with a deep green or sea blue. More than likely you won’t touch it and the other colors included in that palette won’t interest you, either - at least for wearing! A good rule of thumb for beginners is to look for a palette that would most likely work for a range of skin tones.

If you’re trying to ball on a budget, this is one of the best palettes out there. All of the eyeshadows are easy to blend with amazing pigmentation (also known as color pay off - the amount of color you get from one “swipe” of product). This is one of my all time favorite palettes not just for its color range or quality, but also for traveling. This palette is perfect for travel, short or long trip, because it never takes up unnecessary space. The color range offers a couple different looks, from simple to more dramatic, natural to glam. There’s a good balance of mattes and shimmer shadows giving you plenty of options.

This rose gold themed palette is the most romantic range of shadows I’ve come across. It works on all skin tones, tan to pale as a ghost, creating naturally sultry looks with limited effort. I love using this when I go out or for a fancy event - no matter what the occasion, I know I can rely on this palette to create the perfect sultry, romantic eye. I also love that there’s a giant mirror included, plus a dual ended brush for applying and blending the shadows. Plus the packaging is slim enough for easy travel, too!

Tarte has a great selection of eyeshadow palettes but this one I think is most suitable for a range of skin tones. The Toasted palette is another perfect romantic option if you love warm pinks and browns, and your preferences lean more towards a glam look. If this specific one isn’t for you, I still recommend looking at their other options. I love this color selection because it’s easy to create a natural look but you can still vamp it up a bit to a more dramatic eye. Just like the Urban Decay Naked3, it has a large mirror included but it’s smaller and more compact like the NYX Warm Neutrals.
$80 USD / $100 CAD
This is a similar version to the NYX Warm Neutrals palette but this one offers a darker, cooler range, such as a deep taupe and lavender plus a matte black. Viseart’s shadows are smooth and almost creamy, making application and blending a breeze. My personal favorite color from this palette is the red-brown clay color in the second row, perfect as an all over the lid shade for tanned to brown skin tones. The best part of this palette? All the shadows are intensely pigmented which means a little goes a long way, resulting in a longer lasting product making this palette well worth the upfront investment.

I’m a sucker for NARS products. They never disappoint and this palette is no exception. A range of soft but rich rosy pinks, browns, and mauves make up this subtly sultry palette. Additionally, there’s a healthy balance of mattes and shimmers, cool and warm tones, allowing you to create looks from natural everyday to effortless glam easily. The shadows blend so seamlessly, too, so you won’t have to worry about harsh lines between shade transitions. This palette is also a great travel companion with a full mirror and a small, compact shape that will take up limited space in your bag.
