Ingredient Spotlight: Ceramides

With so many different ingredients on the market, sometimes it can be difficult figuring out what skincare products to use. Recently, I became familiar with a new ingredient after trying the Honey Ceramide Full Moisture Cream by COSRx ($26). Before using this product, I had no idea what ceramides were, so I began to research.

Ceramides are lipids (oils) that are naturally found in the upper layers of our skin within cell membranes. They make up around 50% of our outer skin layers and are heavily responsible for maintaining moisture. Specifically, they help to form a defensive layer within skin to lock in moisture and protect the skin barrier.

In the case that you have low ceramide levels you’ll find that your skin will be dry, red or itchy. This can occur through the use of harsh or drying products, as well as environmental factors. Yet, when you incorporate ceramides into your skin this helps to improve overall hydration, increase elasticity, and revive your skin barrier.

Unfortunately, ceramide levels begin to drop around age 30 and continue to decrease from there. Which is why many believe it’s crucial to add ceramides back into your skin to maintain healthy, smooth, and hydrated skin. Luckily, there are many different skincare products at varying price points that contain ceramides. Some of the most popular are; the Honey Ceramide Full Moisture Cream by COSRx ($26), Paula’s Choice CLINICAL Ceramide Enriched Firming Moisturizer ($58), and Dr. Jart’s Ceramidin line ($6-49).

Whether you have a ceramide deficiency or not I highly recommend adding a moisturizer with this ingredient into your skincare routine. It will not only be beneficial in the short term, but also incredibly helpful as a preventative tool for the future.
