Briana's Favorites: Simple Summer Skincare

Unless you happen to live in an area where the climate stays the same year-round, a new season can mean a whole new ball game when it comes to skin care. It’s easy in the winter to add oils and heavy creams into your routine, but when summer arrives it can be a challenge to keep up your routine without feeling like your skincare is caked on. Here are the products I think you need for a great summer skincare routine:

A Great Cleanser

My recommendation would be that you double cleanse in the summertime. Your skin will be harboring sweat, dirt, and all other sorts of grime, so you want to make sure you get it super clean. My current favorite method is using Simple Cleansing Makeup Wipes followed by the Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser, which is nice and soothing after a long day in the sun. Really you could just use your favorite cleanser twice, or any combination of cleansers as long as you feel they get the job done.

A Targeted Treatment

This is the part of your routine that will address any issues like redness, acne, dry spots, etc. You’ll most likely want to find a serum that targets whatever issue you’d like to address. Of course, if you have multiple problems, you can always layer serums or add in an essence. My favorite at the moment is the Boscia Cool Blue Hydrating Essence (now sadly discontinued) for its ability to reduce redness in my skin. I also use a small amount of the Herbivore Botanicals Lapis Oil as a serum for acne, though it could be used as a moisturizer as well. Whatever you use, I highly recommend you find something with a lightweight texture that sinks into the skin easily.

Gel Moisturizer

Put aside your thick creams and salves for now. Come winter they’ll be your best friend, but in the summer there’s nothing better than a gel moisturizer for lightweight hydration. Avoiding dryness is key, but so is feeling comfortable while doing so. I use the Drunk Elephant B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Gel in the summer. The B5 and pineapple ceramides keep my skin hydrated, but never leave it feeling sticky or suffocated.

A Sunscreen

This one might be the most important on this list. The sun does a huge amount of damage to your skin, and really you should be wearing sunscreen even if you’re at your desk looking at a computer all day. It doesn’t take long to apply and it will mean a world of difference in the look of your skin as you age. Find a sunscreen that you really love, if only to help motivate you to put it on everyday. If you’re looking for something light that can be reapplied over makeup, my favorite is the Glossier Invisible Shield.

Face Mists

Now, people have varying opinions on face mists and how well they actually work. My personal opinion is that whatever benefits they claim to have, they are at the least a great tool for refreshing your skin in the midst of a hot summer day. I use the Caudalie Beauty Elixir after cleansing my skin, the Tatcha Luminous Dewy Skin Mist after doing my makeup, and the Mario Badescu Rosewater Spray throughout the day as a refresher. I realize this is probably an excessive mist routine, but it keeps my skin looking dewy and fresh and me feeling happy and hydrated, so no downsides to speak of!

Your summer routine will of course always depend on you and your skin to be successful, so find what works for you. If you’re in need of any more summer skin recommendations, you can always reach out to me on Instagram @briana.wilvert or on my website www.brianawilvert.com!
