Julie Dumais of June Swimwear

Julie Dumais is the designer and founder of June Swimwear, a bathing suit company based in Montreal. Julie started June Swimwear in 2009 after being asked by friends to making custom clothing. She decided to turn this into a business after visiting Australia and seeing a gap in the swimwear market for women who surf that want bathing suits that will not only stay in place, but also look good.

Dumais has been sewing since she was a child. She graduated from university with a degree in International studies. Until not too long ago, Julie was handmaking bathing suits before the demand became too much to handle on her own and she contracted a manufacturer. She still designs and creates sample collections by hand.

I got a chance to visit Julie at her East Montreal studio to ask her about June Swimwear and how she does it all. Working out of a couple hundred square feet, the June Swimwear headquarters is the home and beginning of every new piece of swimwear you'll see from the brand. From fabric, to cut, to design, it's all conceived right in Montreal.

After graduating from university, Dumais started June with only a few thousand dollars, building it from her home to what it is now, a world renowned company selling bathing suits internationally.

June Swimwear's claim to fame? The Bootykini; a hip hugging bikini bottom that accentuates your assets and stays put while you shred the waves. The company has amassed a cult following of Bootykini lovers, with their Instagram account garnering almost 47 thousand followers already.

This year, June Swimwear will be launching brand new collections with fresh colors, prints, and cuts. Just this week, their Spring 2017 collection was launched, featuring the same classic form fitting designs, with all new prints and patterns.
