Karen Behnke of Juice Beauty

Meet Karen Behnke, mother of two, and founder of Juice Beauty, an award winning organic skincare and makeup line formulated using plant based ingredients and powerful organic antioxidants.

Karen got her start in industry in 1983 when she founded PacifiCare Wellness Systems, one of the first health and wellness companies to come to market in the 80's.

13 years later, she left her company and went on to join the Board of Directors and was an Operating Executive for 24 Hour Fitness, before getting pregnant with her son at age 40. The poster-woman for healthy living and wellness, Karen was hyper-aware of what she was putting into her body, but wasn't paying as much attention to what she was putting on it.  Her pregnancy sprung her into action and she began to read labels and learn about all the chemicals that were going into the beauty products she was slathering on her body.

After leaving 24 Hour Fitness, Karen got to work on the concept behind Juice Beauty.  She wanted to radically transformed the chemistry of beauty and make organic skincare that is as effective, if not more effective, than their chemical laden counterparts. The first few years of formulating Juice Beauty were extremely difficult for Karen and the labs she worked with. 5 years later, Juice Beauty finally got their formulations to a point where the products showed considerable results in clinical testing and were ready to be released. In July, the brand will turn 12 years old.

Juice Beauty has become a leader in organic beauty and sets the tone for eco values in the industry. The company's team has grown to now 160+ employees and it's Karen job to coordinate with the product development and marketing teams and keep on top of new product releases and campaigns.

A typical day for Karen involves internal meetings for brainstorming and strategy management, as well as an hour a day of physical activity. Karen takes her health very seriously and competes in mini-triathlons. Every Thursday, the Juice Beauty office participates in a group yoga class in the afternoons, which contributes to the company's corporate culture and mission to promote healthy lifestyles that extend beyond their product lines.

To take care of her skin, Karen cleanses with the Juice Beauty Stem Cellular Cleansing Oil, and follows it with their Anti-Wrinkle Booster Serum, and the Anti-Wrinkle Overnight Cream as well as the Anti-Wrinkle Eye Treatment.

A couple years ago, Juice Beauty formed a multi-level partnership with Gwyneth Paltrow's Goop. The companies have both invested and hold equity in the other. Gwyneth Paltrow recently became Juice Beauty's Creative Director for Makeup and helps the brand develop color cosmetics using plant-based pigments featuring skin-loving ingredients.

Looking forward, Karen hopes to continue staying true to herself and her company as a mission-driven healthy lifestyle entrepreneur and continue creating authentically organic, high performance beauty and skincare products.
