Fashion designer and entrepreneur extraordinaire, Samantha Pleet has added a new job title to her extensive resume: mother.

I had a chance to chat with Samantha about fashion, business, and what's next for her after welcoming her new baby girl Valentine into the world.

At 34, success didn't come overnight for Pleet. Starting her eponymous clothing line 10 years ago, she's had her hands on every part of the business from creative direction to operations.

Having studied Fashion Design at Pratt University, Samantha says that what design school didn't prepare her for was the business side of running and operating your own clothing line.

Though Samantha and her husband Patrick take pride in running the business themselves, Samantha is looking to hire a part-time design assistant to help out.

Pleet describes her style as whimsical but strong and says she designs her clothes for the modern fairytale heroine. Following an underlying mystical theme, she wants to add a little magic to getting dressed. Allowing women to feel powerful in their clothes and straying from the typical massed-produced fast fashion, Samantha Pleet's pieces are of unique quality, lending to an air of new-age vintage.

She cites Elsa Schiaparelli and Vivienne Westwood as role models, drawing from their boldness and confidence in their vision.

Her taste in movies errs on the side of fantasy, much like her clothing. Listing Fantasia, Valerie and Her Week of Wonders, and The Little Mermaid as some of her favorites.

On her essential reading list are Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, the Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling, and my personal favorite, Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov.

Ethereal with a hint of spooky, Pleet's taste in everything fantastical definitely translates to her artistry which gives off major Stepford Wives meets Valley of the Dolls vibes.

What to expect from Samantha Pleet in the coming year? Think...more dreamy clothes and maybe some Valentine-sized ones to match.
