Meet Sky Katz, hip-hop recording artist and actress, best known for her role as Tess on Disney Channel’s Raven’s Home, a modern-day spinoff of the classic ‘00s sitcom That’s So Raven. Sky rose to fame after appearing as a contestant on Season 11 of America’s Got Talent, wowing the judges with her original freestyle raps at only 11 years old.

Now at 14, Sky is making a name for herself in the music industry, releasing new original music and performing for tens of thousands, from the NY Knicks Halftime Show at Madison Square Garden to SXSW.

I chatted with Sky about everything from her role on Raven’s Home, to her dream collaboration, and maintaining a work/life balance at 14.

THIS INTERVIEW HAS BEEN EDITED AND CONDENSED FOR BREVITY AND CLARITY.

How did you get into rapping and when did you know you wanted to start doing it more seriously?

I’ve always loved hip-hop music and rapping in front of an audience of any size. I’ve been taking the mic at parties since I was  5-years-old. When I was 10 I knew I really wanted to do it on the next level.

When did you get your role on Raven's Home and how have things changed for you since?

I was cast as Tess on Raven’s Home when I was 11 years old. So much has changed for me and I’ve learned so much, met so many incredible people and have had a lot of amazing experiences since then.

What has been the most defining moment of your career?

When I got the call that I was cast as Tess nothing was ever the same. I was going to be on an iconic Disney show - totally life changing.

What’s the biggest challenge you had to overcome throughout all of this?

My biggest challenge has been keeping up with the rest of my cast. They’re all so talented and have more experience than me so I’ve had to work really hard and learn quickly.

What do you want your fans and listeners to take away from your music when they hear it?

I want them to enjoy my music, dance and relish the escape that music can provide for people.

How do you balance work and being a teenager?

I try to manage my time as best as possible. When I’m not working I make sure to get basketball and gym time in and I always find time to have fun with my family and friends. That’s really important to me.

What advice do you have for young girls looking to break into the entertainment industry?

My advice is always be yourself. Don’t change or try to change for anyone because the right opportunities will come along if you’re true to yourself.

Who are some artists that really inspire you?

I’m inspired by so many people. Nicki Minaj has always been my number one inspiration musically. I also love J. Cole because his songs really tell stories and I love that. In the acting world, I look up to the people that find careers in both music and acting like Selena Gomez.

What's your dream collaboration?

Nicki Minaj is my dream collaboration. I would do anything to work with her.

What big projects do you have planned for 2019?

The 3rd season of Raven’s Home will air and it’s really a fun season.  I’ll also have more music out. It’s going to be a great year!
